Samsung has announced the release of an official software development kit (SDK) for its Galaxy Gear series of smartwatches, as well as an upgraded mobile SDK for its Galaxy S5 smartphone.
Samsung has announced that Mobile SDK 1.5 will allow developers to create apps that take advantage of the new features included in the Galaxy S5, including fingerprint scanning and improved motion-detection.
Another key feature of the new SDK is the ability to create apps which simultaneously operate across both a smartphone and a smart TV.
In a statement, Samsung says apps for Galaxy Gear will be able to be coded in web standard languages.
“The Gear SDK is a Tizen based Wearable Platform, and therefore is very developer friendly… Developers can also utilize the Samsung API and W3C standard Web API to develop Gear apps. As a result, apps developed by these kinds of quality developers are certainly great news for future Gear 2 owners.
The company also says that creating a Galaxy Gear app will consist of two parts, with apps consisting of a client for Galaxy Gear and server app written for Android on the Galaxy S5.
“In the case of the Gear 2, it is paired with a host device, such as a smartphone or tablet. Therefore, applications also consist of two parts,” the company states.
“Applications for the host are developed under the Android, whereas applications for the Gear 2 are developed under the web-based platform. The communication of the two applications can be enabled through the Samsung Accessory Package of Samsung Mobile SDK.”
The company has also introduced a Gear Fit SDK for Samsung Gear Fit for its Gear Fit smart bracelet and a S Health SDK that interacts with health sensors.
